The Pitch could be something like that:
- A group of astronomers want to go to the Moon
- They build a rocket and fly there
- They confront the selenites and return to earth

The Story Pattern

  2. NEED: Want to go to the moon
  3. GO:They build a rocket and travel to the moon
  4. SEARCH: Land in the moon and go inside de caves
  5. FIND: They find giant mushrooms and Selenites

"Le Voyage Dans la Lune" (A Trip to the Moon) was one of the first films in history, is considered one of the most important movies ever done.

Le Voyage dans la Lune (France, 1902), the screen's first science fiction story, was a 14 minute masterpiece (nearly one reel in length (about 825 feet)), created by  French director and magician Georges Mèlies (1861-1938).

George Melies' landmark film tells the story of a group of men who want to explore the moon so they build a rocket and fly there only to discover some moon monsters. the amusing story just shows the wonderful mind of the director. This film's plot,  is a light-hearted satire criticizing the conservative scientific community of its time, it was inspired by Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon (1865) and H. G. Wells' First Men in the Moon (1901).

The film has no sound, no close-ups and neither camera movement.  Since it was meant to be narrated live, it doesn't even have intertitles. The director relied on a new technology, techniques and conventions that resist the view many years later.

The look of the moon is brilliantly done as is the underground creatures that attack towards the end. There's also the landmark scene of the ship flying into the face of the moon and there's no question this is one of the greatest scenes in film history even if it was made over a hundred years ago.

This film, Melies' 400th and most notable film, was made on an astronomical budget for the time of 10,000 Francs - risky, but worthwhile since it was hugely successful. Its popularity also led to it being illegally copied, released under others' names, and pirated.

An example with a brief scheme of the work
SEVEN SAMURAIS

Data Sheet:
Influential Japanese film from 1954. ("The magnificents Seven", "Bugs"...)
Long film of 207 minutes, 3h27' by Akira Kurosawa.

Plot:
- A 16th cetury japanese village is terrorized by bandits.
- Local farmers look fo the help of a group of Samurais.
- Seven Samurais trained and leaded the farmers to fight the bandits.
The film has the mother of all ‘assembling the team’ sequences, nowadays an obligatory part of all action movies.

Interesting points of the film which created a pattern for future movies:
  • Differentiated characters: so the spectator is atached to them.
  • Plot ideas: Reluctant heroe, the recruitment of the heroes, the romance between the younster and the local girl.
  • Action scenes: Innovative use of cameras, General and "Guerrilla Unit".

So this is a classic film about Honnor and Duty with memorable characters and stunning action that owes its popularity to the fact that it was one of the first Japanese films arrived to the western viewers.
It introduced a culture that was foreign and intriguing, but a the same time accessible to the audience. Kurosawa achievement was to combine the conventions of the western films with a Japanese genres, combiningclassical story telling with innovative technical camera language.

Your favourite Film

This time we will be completing an essay on a Film we really like.

You will be following next steps :

 - to write the PITCH of your film

- to apply the model proposed in "Every story is the same" to your film.

- Prepare a short presentation where you will be adding:

  • the basic data of the film.
  • the plot, aspects you liked and scenes to point out.
  • technical issues, aspects you liked and scenes to point out.
  • personal recommendation.

The Pitch could be something like that: - A middle class family and their nanny's quiet life - A divorce and a non wanted pregnancy - They confront the situation to recover a balance in their life The Story Pattern

YOU: A happy family and their nanny.              NEED: A divorce and a pregnancy.                     GO: They need to recover their former balance. SEARCH: The mother and the nanny they confront their problems                                  FIND: They learn to live without their men. TAKE: Divorce and miscarriage                             RETURN: They find their peace                 CHANGE:: Back to their love ROMA

This a film directed by Alfonso Cuarón, two and a quarter hours of cinematic pleasure. ROMA is a 2018 movie produced by Netflix. The director Alfonso Cuarón also created “Gravity”, “Children of Men”, “Y Tu Mama Tambien” or Harry Potters  "The prisioner of  Azkaban”.

This is the story of a family that lives in the neighbourhood of Roma in Mexico City, and more specifically the camera follows Cleo, a young domestic worker starring Yalitza Aparicio. So ROMA is like a loving portrait of the woman who raised the director, his super-nanny and a complete mosaic of Mexico society during the 70'. Cuarón is telling us his own childhood and shows us their housekeeper’s ups and downs, the same time the relationship between the different social classes in Mexico and a touch of the political situation in DF during the (repression of the students ). With a simple storytelling is describing different people's life until we feel close to them, until we really care for the characters he presents us (Cleo, the mother, the other maid, the grandma...) This film is shot in black and white, because of its social and its title, Roma reminds us of the Italian neo-realism of the 50’. It has beautiful photography, landscapes and domestic shots (in the roof of the house). Director’s filming is classical with a lazy camera that beautiful spots to shot, like the backyard of the presentation or the scenes of the father and mother car parking, which are anthological.

This is a film that you should watch if you miss your childhood!
